10 Jul Andy Murray’s Wimbledon semi could cost the UK economy 750m in sickies
We have all been there. A few pre sicky coughs and sniffles several days before the big performance. It happens. However, it is estimated that with the combination of the glorious forecast and the Murray vs Federer Friday the 10th will be a sicky-fest!
A humongous 13 million Brits are expected to watch this epic clash of tennis titans. Whether it is in a pub, at home or an office TV approximately 1 in 4 Brits are expected to tune it.
Oliver Wheeler, spokesman for Viagogo (ticket merchant), said: “It looks like Black Friday for sickies, with a record number of ticket searches, fans keen to follow the match and sunny weather.
“With fans at work also following the match, just 60 minutes’ lost productivity has a substantial cost to businesses.”
Premier sporting events such as this are always a drain on the UK business economy budgets. Absenteeism and presenteeism combined costs the UK economy approximately 92 Billion per year!
